Well cementation

Since June 2003, the Quebec government has adopted a new regulation with regard to ground water capture. Now, a well must be located:

  • A minimum of 30 metres from an impermeable wastewater treatment system;
  • A minimum of 15 metres from a permeable wastewater treatment system;
  • A minimum of 30 metres from cropland.

However, the well may be located a minimum of 15 metres from a permeable wastewater treatment system if a well sealer is installed. In addition, if the rock is less than 5 metres from the ground surface, it is mandatory that the well be sealed.

Sealing a well involves making it impermeable to any surface water infiltration, thereby protecting it from contaminants and bacteria that may be found in this water.

How is a well sealed? By drilling a hole of 10 inches diameter in the first five metres and filling the space between the wall of the hole and the well casing with bentonite, a material that will make the area completely impermeable.

A site visit will allow our team to adequately assess where your well should be located and whether a well sealer is required.
